From global niche to local relevance

ESPN Africa aimed to establish itself as the go-to place for American sports like the NBA and NFL in the local market. The challenge was to make content about foreign sports resonate with South African viewers. Enter Bob O'Connor, ESPN Africa's Special Correspondent, in collaboration with comedian Tyson Ngubeni. Bob used humor, inspired by Ron Burgundy of Anchorman, to get the message across. Our team shot content in one day, resulting in multiple outputs. We also ran PR and influencer campaigns, including radio partnerships with 94.7 and YFM for the NFL. This effort successfully conveyed ESPN's comeback to the local audience and ESPN Africa's position as the American sports hub.
